Ultrasound
Ultrasound (US) images, also referred to as a sonogram, creates an image by using high-frequency sound waves. US images are captured in real time, meaning the technologist sees structure movement of the internal organs as well as blood flow through the vessels. US shows the actual tissue structure of an organ (differentiates between cystic and solid areas). There is no radiation exposure to the patient. NOMS Ultrasound Department uses the IU22 Phillips Ultrasound System, one of the top performers on the market today.
US is useful in examining the internal structures of the body including, but not limited to liver, spleen, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, aorta, uterus and ovaries, thyroid, and testicles. Ultrasound guided needle biopsies are also available.
Doppler Ultrasound is a special US technique that evaluates blood velocity as it flows through the arteries and veins. Tests include, but are not limited to, Carotid Doppler to evaluate the patency of blood vessels carrying blood to the brain and Venous Doppler to evaluate for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
